Trainee Train Driver: Stage 1 - Train Driver Application

The initial application for a Trainee Train Driver vacancy can be considered the first real hurdle. It is also a hurdle at which many fall. There tends to be no specific educational or experience requirements for the role, and applications are assessed on their individual merit. It is well worth putting time and effort into your application, and ensuring that there are no spelling or grammar errors, and that you have fully reflected on your answers to each question.

Some companies will simply invite you to send in a CV and covering letter upon advertising a trainee train driver vacancy, others will require you to fill in a paper or online application form, as well as submit your CV. As such, it's always worthwhile updating your CV thoroughly, and ensuring that it is as professional and well presented as can be. If you're serious about it, and worried that yours isn't up to scratch, you could always use a professional CV company as an inexpensive way of getting your CV as professional looking as possible, it will be worth it in the long run. Remember, professional recruiters will be casting their eye over your CV, and will be looking for only the most professional looking. All others will end up in the waste paper basket. Read other peoples CV's, look at the internet for examples, and really try to put yourself in the recruiters shoes and think about what they would be looking for. A lot of people will recoil at the idea of spending money getting your CV up to scratch, but I would see it as a worthwhile investment if it gives you an edge or advantage.

The paper/online application forms will ask you a variety of questions in addition to all the usual personal information. It is key that you read them carefully, and fully understand what they are asking you for. Always use real world examples to back up your answers, and focus on safety, reliability, and your ability to concentrate when answering them. Never make spelling mistakes! So check your answers thoroughly, and ask others to recheck them. Many people find the questions quite challenging, especially if they haven't been job hunting in recent times. Remember that you are being assessed on your suitability to perform the role of Train Driver, so make sure that in your answers you demonstrate that you have the skills required to be a Train Driver.

What happens next? Am I a Train Driver yet?

Hmmm, not quite. So what does happen next? Your submitted application will be considered by the railway HR department. Railway HR departments are notorious for their slow moving nature, and besides, they do have over 300 applications to go through for every vacancy, so for a new batch of 10 trainees, they would have well in the region of 3000 forms to go through! That will take some time, so don't worry if you haven't heard within a week. Again - this is why it's so important to get your application spot on.

Even if your do submit a flawless application, unfortunately it's no guarantee that you will progress to the next stage due to the sheer volume of applicants. Don't let it discourage you though, keep applying and you will eventually get there. Just make sure that your application is as good as you think it is, and don't delude yourself. If it's not, then don't submit it until you are happy with it. Remember, Train Driver Trainee vacancies come up rarely, so you can't afford to squander any chances you get.

The most appropriate saying for the whole recruitment process is: "planning and preparation prevents poor performance"
